May Inside Track Features Audio for Virtual and Augmented Reality

Inside Track

The AES Inside Track features expert industry curators highlighting a topic of choice, with editorial insight as well as links to related research topics, videos, and more. It's available exclusively through the AES Member Portal and is a member benefit, free to all AES members

This month's curator is Gavin Kearney, vice-chair of the AES Technical Committee on Audio for Games and leader of the Audio for New Realities sub-group. As Gavin explains, virtual and augmented reality is a rapidly growing market with applications not only in gaming and cinematic presentations, but also in music production, broadcast, social media, healthcare and education. Spatial audio is an essential underlying technology for VR and AR, being used not only to give a strong sense of reality, but also to add ‘hyper-reality’ to make immersive experiences visceral and plausible.

This month's Spotlight video interview hosted by Francis Rumsey, continues the hot topic of mixing for object-based audio. It features Jon Francombe talking about his JAES paper on mix parameters for modifying envelopment, published in the March AES Journal.

Greatest JAES Papers of All Time?

AES Journal

"What are the greatest JAES papers of all time?" asks AES Publications Policy Committee Chair, Josh Reiss, in his recent blog post promoting the AES E-Library. "I was curious which were the most important JAES papers, so had a look at Google Scholar to see which had the most citations," says Reiss. "This has lots of issues, not just because Scholar won’t find everything, but because a lot of the impact is in products and practice, which doesn’t usually lead to citing the papers. Nevertheless, I looked over the list, picked out some of the most interesting ones and following no rules except my own biases, selected the Greatest Papers of All Time Published in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society."
