130th Recording Competition Judge: John Dunkerley

130th Recording Competition Judge: John Dunkerley

John Dunkerley will be judging entries in the category "Traditional Acoustic Recording". Come listen to this expert offer valuable feedback at the Recording Competition finals in London!

"John Dunkerley was senior balance engineer at the Decca Record Co. Ltd. from 1968-1997, until the closure of the recording centre. He has worked subsequently with the majority of the major labels, especially EMI Classics.

Dunkerley’s teacher and mentor was Kenneth Wilkinson, who was previously chief engineer of Decca until his retirement in 1980. Wilkinson’s career spanned more than fifty years beginning with the start of electrical recording at Decca in 1929.

He has worked with all the U.K. orchestras and choruses including the major university choirs of Cambridge and Oxford. In Europe, he has worked in all the important cities, especially Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Vienna and St. Petersburg. He has recorded in the major North American centres, such as Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, New York, San Francisco and, of course, Montreal.

The roster of artists with which Dunkerley has worked is too numerous to quote, but would be best described as the most significant performers of the last five decades. Film credits include Stanley Kubrick.

Dunkerley has worked on well over a thousand discs, including more than sixty operas. Amongst his many awards are: The Gramophone, Grand prix du Disque, Edison, Juno, Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, Prix Italia, Japan Academy, Classical Brits, Prix Caecilia, Liszt Academy, Stereo Review [Record of the Year], and numerous Grammys."
