John was Senior Technologist for NPR Labs, developing and evaluating new technologies, procedures and standards for public radio. He was involved in dozens of technology projects, including audio loudness management, digital audio broadcasting, RF signal analysis and psychoacoustic testing.

He was a radio chief engineer in the 1970s, joining NPR in 1980 to work on technology projects and FCC regulations. In 1986 he moved to broadcast consulting work at Jules Cohen and Associates and then Moffet, Larson and Johnson, returning to NPR in 2004 to help establish NPR Labs. Now retired, he has a private consulting practice for audio clients and continues broadcast engineering with Cavell Mertz and Associates.

John is a past president the Washington DC Section of the AES, contributing author to four editions of the NAB Engineering Handbook, and a recipient of Engineering Achievement Awards from the Association of Public Radio Engineers' and the National Association of Broadcasters.
