Online Competition for All AES Student Members!

The Audio Engineering Society's Student Delegate Assembly is updating the Student Recording and Design Competitions for the 148th AES Convention following the cancellation of the in-person aspects of the Convention due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As it will be impossible to host our regular student competitions, the Student Delegate Assembly has adapted the competitions to be completely online as a component of a virtualized Convention Technical Program.

For the Student Recording Competition, the category rules will remain the same as published. The submission deadline is April 27. Registration for the online AES 148th Virtual Convention (at a modest registration fee of $25. USD) is required prior to competition judging. The online registration portal will be activated prior to the submission deadline. More details about the online finals will be coming soon. The SDA strongly encourages every student entering the competition to read the entirety of the rules, even if the student has entered in the past as many rules have changed. The full outline of the rules can be found here: http://www.aes.org/students/awards/recording/. Any questions or concerns can be directed to the Student Delegate Assembly by email.

For the Student Design Competition, the projects will be judged in an online format and finalists will be chosen through that medium. Deadlines and registration are identical to the Recording Competition, as detailed above. The SDA strongly encourages every student entering the competition to read the entirety of the rules, even if the student has entered in the past as many rules have changed. The full outline of the rules can be found here: http://www.aes.org/students/awards/design/. Any questions or concerns can be directed to the Student Delegate Assembly by email.

The SDA is excited to see all of the online submissions! We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy at home.

AES Vienna Convention Canceled for May 2020

AES Vienna Convention Canceled for May 2020
With the health and safety of our attendees, membership, exhibitors, and staff being of utmost concern during the global COVID-19 pandemic, and following weeks of discussions with the host Austria Center Vienna, the Audio Engineering Society has officially canceled the live, in-person components of the AES Vienna 2020 Convention scheduled for May.
AES leadership, the Convention organizing committee and headquarters staff members are working diligently to organize the logistics of a virtualization of the Convention technical program into an engaging, compelling, educational and productive online experience.
Details on the virtual Convention, which are being developed to include video presentations of Papers, Workshops, Tutorials, Tech Tours and other technical program content along with live- and forum-based dialog with presenters, will be shared as they become available. We appreciate your patience and understanding as the myriad of options and details are finalized.

The First Ever AES Worship Sound Academy a Success

— The Audio Engineering Society provided two packed days of training and education for house of worship technical ministry staff on audio and production technologies and applications —

The Audio Engineering Society, the AES Nashville Section and Belmont University hosted house of worship technical ministry staff from near 50 churches for the first-ever AES Worship Sound Academy. Held March 10 and 11 in the impressive Johnson Center at Belmont in Nashville, a line-up of industry experts dug deep into the core technologies being used in modern worship, including mixing FOH and monitors, personal monitoring, miking, wireless systems, streaming, podcasting, recording, acoustics, system optimization and more. Audio theory and its specific application to the worship space were covered in a dozen sessions, delivering both foundational knowledge and a plethora of actionable guidelines and recommendations that the attendees were eager to apply to improve the use of technology in support of their home church’s ministry.

Worship Sound Academy attendees came loaded with questions and a host of issues to address and departed with new understanding of the technical solutions available to meet their needs. Along with the willingness of the presenters to share their combined decades of experience, technical partners filled an exhibition space where they also answered the attendees’ questions, providing insights into their gear and its application. Those technical partners, representing influential manufacturers and service providers, deeply involved in support of houses of worship, were Alclair Audio, Allen & Heath, Bosch-Electrovoice-Dynacord, d&b audiotechnik, DiGiCo, DPA Microphones, JH Audio, Lawo, QSC, Riedel, Shure, Simply Sound Acoustics, Solotech and key partner Waves. Additional supporters of the program content were Essential Audio and Spectrum Sound of Nashville, along with local worship team members.

The AES Worship Sound Academy provided worship tech team members an unprecedented chance to listen, learn and connect with industry professionals and the opportunity to network with peers that share their challenges and goals.
