SC-05-02 meeting report, Amsterdam, 2008-05

Report of the meeting of the SC-05-02 Working Group on Audio Connectors of the SC-05 Subcommittee on Interconnections, held in conjunction with the AES 124th Convention in Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2008-05-17

The meeting was convened by SC-05 vice-chair J. Woodgate.

The agenda and the report of the previous meeting, held in New York, 2007-10-05, were approved as written.

Open Projects

AES-R3-R: Review of AES-R3-2001: AES standards project report on single programme connector - Compatibility for patch panels of TRS Connectors
This is no longer a project, it is an administration action point to withdraw the document when AES-X113 is published.

AES14-R: Review of AES14-1992 (r2004): AES Standard for professional audio equipment - Application of connectors, part 1, XLR-type polarity and gender
No action was requested or required.

AES26-R: Review of AES26-2001 (r2006): AES recommended practice for professional audio - Conservation of the polarity of audio signals
No action was requested or required.

AES45-R: Review of AES45-2001 (r2006): AES standard for single programme connectors - Connectors for loudspeaker-level patch panels
No action was requested or required.

Development Projects

AES-X011: Fiber-Optic Audio Connections: Connectors and Cables Being Used and Considered for Audio
M. Natter reported that the SC-05-02-F meeting attracted only two participants. A new draft, including only currently-agreed items, will be put on the reflector ASAP.

AES-X105: Modified XLR-3 Connector for Digital Audio
New drawings including details of the keys and keyways will be sent by Natter to M. Yonge. Normally, this information would only be referenced from the IEC standard IEC 61076-2-103, but it is not yet included there. This addition will enable a PWD to be circulated for approval.

[Post-meeting information added: Manufacturers have to decide whether to ask IEC to update IEC 61076-2-103 to include these connectors. The Maintenance Result date (when an amendment must be published) is March 2010, and work usually takes three years, so it is already late for such a proposal. When a decision is made, Woodgate will help to persuade IEC SC48B to accept the proposal.]

AES-X113: Universal female phone jack
Secretariat-formatted drafts will be ready soon

AES-X123: XL Connectors to Improve Electromagnetic Compatibility
Secretariat-formatted drafts will be ready soon.

AES-X130: Data Connector in a XL Connector Shell
Update from Yonge expected soon.

Liaisons

Nothing further to report. Woodgate and Natter have access to IEC SC48B documents on connector standards.

New projects

Fibre-optic connectors for harsh environments (Proposed AES-X173)
PIR submitted, to be sent to SC-05 for approval.

High performance data connector with rugged shell (Proposed AES-X174)
PIR submitted, to be sent to SC-05 for approval.

New business

There was no new business.

The next meeting will be scheduled in conjunction with the AES 125th Convention in San Francisco, CA., US., 2008-10.
