Location: Bragg 180, College of Media and Entertainment, Middle Tennessee State University

Speaker(s): Ianina Canalis, Meyer Sound, and Chris Manhey, Omni Soundlab founder/producer

Multichannel mixing formats and spatial audio reproduction are not limited to commercially distributed music recordings and film/television presentation.  Live sound reinforcement and "sonic art" installations are also benefitting from significant technical innovations and creative use of immersive sound.

This meeting presents two guests with unique insights and accomplishments in this area.  The live interview with Prof. Gargel will take place via Zoom.  Join fellow students in Bragg 180 to monitor the presentation in a communal setting (headphones recommended) or use the Zoom link below to participate remotely.

Ianina Canalis is Meyer Sound’s Application Architect—Spatial Audio Specialist, and was an integral member of the development team for Spacemap Go, Meyer Sound’s spatial sound design and live mixing tool. Prior to joining Meyer Sound, Ianina held posts as a lecturer in live sound technology at universities in both her native Argentina and the United Kingdom. During this time, she continued to develop and demonstrate her own software for multichannel live sound production she calls ISSP –Immersive Sound System Panning –, which she used at several live events, some of them sponsored by SoundGirls, like sound:check Xpo 2019 in Mexico City and later that year at the AES convention in New York.

Ianina initially developed ISSP while earning her Master of Science in Audio Engineering from Leeds Beckett University. She also holds dual bachelor’s degrees (Audiovisual Technology, Sound and Recording) from the National University of Lanús in Argentina, and she worked on tour as a Sound Engineer for more than 14 years.

Christopher Manhey is a new media artist and Latin Grammy Award-winning music producer. His field of study has been around the relationship between space and the listener, how sound, beyond music, influences and connects audiences through different technologies.  The immersive approach has been a key point into how develop sound images considering spaces and aesthetics through the whole narrative.

Recently he founded “Omni Soundlab” a studio focused on New Media Art and Immersive Audio research and production working with systems as Dolby Atmos, 4DSOUND and Spacemap Go for digital platforms and live installations. On 2022 he premiered “Syncretismo” in a 48.9 sound system and a reactive holographic volumetric installation for the Spatial Fest at Monom (Berlin).
