Envelop SF gave AES-SF a special presentation of spatial audio, in their recently completed San Francisco immersive audio space. The creative team from Envelop discussed the art and technology of immersive audio, how they built their new permanent venue and Envelop's free open source software. Their listening area was cylindrical in shape, with three layers of speakers. Most of the musical selections were up-sourced, though sound effects were recorded specifically for this speaker layout. Unfortunately their seating was only on the ground, with squishy pillows which were not comfortable. It would have been interesting to be aligned with the central layer of speakers in order to hear a depth layer in addition to a height layer...
