Summary

The meeting started off a little late because we had to bring in extra chairs and had technical problems with the projector. We started off at 8:35PM. Neight welcomed everyone and let us know that the idea behind tonight's clinic is to show us the general idea to create our own samples for when we have a specific thing we're going for but can't find samples to match or don't have the time to find it. Neight is using reason and he started out getting percussive sounds. He explained that we are looking for clean sounds that are loud without clipping. For the sounds he used a large array of random tools like a hammer banging on a table, a plastic bin, and everyone clapping. After he getting a few different options from each sound he edited the best takes down to short clips and distorted them to use as synth sounds. He proceeded to engage his audience by putting together possible samples and getting input from everyone as to what should be done for each example. In a short 20 minutes he had created 3 possible samples and each one had a different groove. He went on to build an entire track using random sounds like a kazoo and all kinds of different plug ins. He had a lot of good advice throughout the clinic like sometimes a mic can be the big difference in the sound you get and using a built in laptop mic might be the right thing in a pinch or when you'r just experimenting. He brought out a kids keyboard he had previously put an audio input and output on it to create his own synth and all the students in attendance were impressed and interested in the idea that you can build your own synth for less than $20 if you do the research and put the time in. He opened the floor for questions like differences in DAW's and their abilities before wrapping it up by concluding that we could all go home and take the stuff out of our trunks and be able to make some great samples ourselves. The meeting concluded at 9:58PM with everyone ready to start building beats.
