Summary

On October 29th, the well-established Webster University Student Section and the newly recreated St. Louis Regional Section combined forces to host An Evening With Geoff Emerick at Webster University's Moore Auditorium. With a packed house of around 350 attendees, Mr. Emerick regaled the audience with tales from sessions with the Beatles and other artists, and showed footage from a BBC documentary about popular British bands covering Beatles' tunes. His kind, gentle manner and mild demeanor impressed the audience, as he discussed the creation and implementation of some of the most innovative recording techniques of the era, and its implications in today's changed world of audio. The audience was enthralled throughout his discussion and the ensuing question and answer period, which was predictably followed by 45 minutes of autographs and photos with audience members.

Mr. Emerick also proved himself a valuable asset to the students at Webster University, as he sat in on three classes, adding input to subjects like Mixing, Analog Recording, and Multitrack Recording. The students benefited tremendously from this one-on-one interaction with a legend in our business, and it is a day they will remember throughout their lives.

At the end of the event, the audience was reminded by moderator Gary Gottlieb of the upcoming Central Region AES Student Summit on April 3rd - 5th, 2009, hosted by the Webster Student Section and supported by the St. Louis Regional section, which brings together 400-500 students from throughout the region, along with dozens of educators and professionals. This year Phil Ramone is slated to be the keynote speaker.
