Michael Carnes

Michael Carnes

Primary Affiliation: Exponential Audio - Cottonwood Heights, UT, USA

Michael Carnes grew up with one foot in music and the other in science. After touring as a guitarist for several years, he returned to school and eventually received an advanced degree in composition from Boston University. During that time he was invited into the computer music program at MIT and discovered a latent love of computing. Over the next years he worked in the fields of analytical computing, speech recognition and operating system design. 1987 found him at Lexicon, where he was to remain for 25 years. His first product was the massive Opus audio mixer/editor. His transition to reverb developer began with the PCM90, followed by the popular 960L where he provided some of the first multichannel reverb algorithms. Later years brought the PCM96 hardware family and eventually the many Lexicon plugins which remain popular to this day.

2012 brought a change of direction, with Carnes leaving Lexicon and founding his own company, Exponential Audio. In that first year, he implemented an audio therapy for tinnitus patients. That therapy is now in use by returning military veterans. Soon after came a pair of reverb plugins--PhoenixVerb and R2--which have become popular as a result of their natural sound and flexibility. October brings the first surround reverb plugins. The new plugins have been developed in consultation with many prominent film mixers and are already at work on upcoming productions.

Michael Carnes enjoys alpine hiking, photography, astronomy and of course classical music and jazz. He would like to acknowledge his debt to the many fine reverb developers who’ve gone before.
