Summary

On February 2nd, 2010, UHart AES welcomed published author and UMass Lowell Sound Recording Technology professor Alex Case to the Hartt School of Music's Berkman Auditorium. The seminar answered questions on what reverb is, how it is reproduced in the analog and digital domains, and the different ways it can be utilized in musical productions. Concepts of acoustics were covered, and data from measurements taken at world-renowned concert halls and Avatar Studios' staircase reverb chamber was analyzed. Case also explained the "spring" and "plate" mechanical reverb methods. Applications given went beyond the standard techniques for creating ambience and space - Case also explained the use of reverb to brighten or darken sounds, as an alternative to EQ. Case's three-hour presentation was thoroughly technical, highly informative, and immensely entertaining.
