W16: Watermarks and Fingerprints - Horses for Courses

Chair:
Richard Gooch, International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, London, UK
Panelists:
Jürgen Herre, Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, Erlangen, Germany
Ton Kalker, Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven, The Netherlands

With the launch of DVD-Audio titles and electronically distributed music, the public has been exposed to watermarked content. Fingerprinting is now being used in peer-to-peer networks. How do these technologies compare in various applications? Will the promise of fingerprinting mean that audiophiles need no longer be concerned about adding watermarks to audio? Do fingerprinting technologies spell the end of privacy in personal listening? The workshop explored these issues and more.
