W11: Guerrilla Acoustics III: Perspectives on Acoustical Requirements for Small Rooms with an Emphasis on Project Studios

Chair:
Jeff D. Szymanski, Auralex Acoustics, Inc., Indianapolis, IN, USA

Panelists:
Jeff Hedback, Auralex Acoustics, Inc., Indianapolis, IN, USA
Doug Jones, Columbia College, Chicago, IL, USA
Andrew Smith, TerraSonde, Denver, CO, USA
Brian Tankersley, GBT Studios, Nashville, TN, USA

Panelists looked at the acoustical requirements of small rooms from several different industry perspectives. Studio owners, recording engineers, musicians, and designers all have different views on what makes a small room great in terms of acoustics. Panelists, which included a musician with extensive studio experience, a recording engineer turned studio owner and a world-renowned studio designer, offered their viewpoints. Necessary communication between the different people involved in studio design and use were also be addressed. The main focus of the workshop was a discussion of the use of the Audio Tool Box, a new tool that anyone can easily use to quantify acoustical problems in potential or existing studio spaces.
