AES 140th Convention

AES 140th Convention
Location: Palais des Congrés, Paris, France
Dates: June 4–7, 2016

The AES is in Paris next summer for its European Convention, and now's the time to start thinking about preparing a paper or an engineering brief. Upcoming Conferences

Dereverberation and Reverberation of Audio, Music, and Speech

DREAMS

Leuven, Belgium, 3–5 February, 2016

Now's the time to register for the DREAMS conference - early bird prices end on December 15th. Vesa Välimäki of Aalto University in Finland will give the first keynote, entitled “More than 50 Years of Artificial Reverberation.” Stefan Goetze and Ann Spriet, papers chairs, have coordinated sessions on all three days of the conference, dealing with topics including blind characterization of room acoustics, noise reduction and dereverberation, artificial reverberation, and perceptual issues. A large number of demonstrations are also being staged by participants, exemplifying the technology described in papers.

Audio for Games

Audio for Games

London, UK, 10–12 February, 2016

Hot on the heels of last year’s conference, and breaking its two-yearly cycle because of the explosive growth of Virtual Reality (VR) technology for games, the AES is pleased to be hosting its fifth conference dedicated to audio for games. An important emphasis will be on VR and augmented reality in games, as well as in music, film, and non-game applications, including coverage of middleware for games and VR. There’ll also be some hands-on sessions with sponsors, and detailed analysis of a big game due for release in the spring of 2016. Register before January 10th to get early bird prices.

Sound Field Control

AES SFC Conference

Guildford, UK, 18–20 July, 2016

We invite you to participate in the second AES International Conference on Sound Field Control, which will gather researchers, engineers and users to explore and discuss arrays, algorithms, abstractions and applications. Sound field control technology enables the active management of audio delivered within an acoustical environment. The three-day conference program incorporates keynote and tutorial lectures, research talks, themed workshop panel discussions, poster presentations and demonstrations. It will focus on the dissemination of technical solutions and recommended practices, which may stimulate new ideas for potential commercial applications of sound field control.

The Call for Contributions is now available, with deadlines of January 31st for paper proposals, and May 15th for demonstrations.

AES Mourns Loss of Two Audio Greats

Norman Pickering

Norman Pickering

Norman C. Pickering was a pioneer of innovations in phonograph cartridge design and the first secretary of the AES. Also known for his research on violin strings, bows and violin acoustics, Pickering, who was frustrated by the audio quality of recordings, in the mid-1940’s developed a better-quality phono pickup and styli for records: the Pickering pickup. Later manufactured as the Pickering cartridge, this design was initially developed by Norman Pickering for his own use, before he began manufacturing cartridges for broadcast and recording studios.

Irving Joel

Irv Joel

Irving L. Joel was for decades an integral member of the New York recording community and a beloved member of the Audio Engineering Society. Joel’s contributions to the AES include work on Standards Committees and the Historical Committee. The Oral History Project, composed of audio/video recordings of interviews with over thirty significant contributors to the art and science of recording, and which Joel created and supported, may be his most lasting contribution, with his interviews creating a significant first-person account of the recording community.

Standards News

Standards

Calls for Comment have been issued for three parts of the draft AES70 standard for audio applications of networks, known as the Open Control Architecture. AES70 defines a scalable control-protocol architecture for the control and monitoring of professional media networks. It addresses device control and monitoring only.
