The Audio Engineering Society brings audio engineering education and technology to the forefront in January with the announcement of Audio Science events taking place during the AES@NAMM Pro Sound Symposium: Live & Studio 2019. Being held concurrently with The NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA, January 24 – 27, this series of AES@NAMM presentations offers practical audio technology knowledge and its scientific application in audio productions in the studio, on-air and streamed, on stage and beyond. Additionally, several presentations will be held in Mandarin and one presented in Spanish. These featured NAMM U Education Center sessions take place on the 4th floor of the Anaheim Hilton. Registration for AES@NAMM passes is independent of The NAMM Show badge registration – pre-registration discounts to attend both events are available.
On day one of the event, Thursday, January 24, the Audio Sciences series at AES@NAMM dives deep into key production topics ranging from editing and processing to amplification and sound reproduction methodologies. Recording and music production-related presentations include “Audio Source Separation and Spectral Editing – A Powerful & Creative Combo” with host and demonstrator Rick Silva, and “Creative ‘In The Box’ Mixing (Presented in Spanish: Mezcla Creativa ‘In The Box’)” with Juan de Dios Martin, both offering perspectives into how computer-based systems can algorithmically and creatively expand production possibilities. In the special panel presentation ”Dynamic EQ with Parametric Filters,” moderator Duane Wise with Alan Meyerson & George Massenburg (via Skype) will use the Wholegrain Digital Systems Quartet DynPEQ to demonstrate that dynamics applied to parametric EQ bands is a powerful tool with many audio production applications. Further, room tuning and measurement is analyzed by Bruce Black in the session “The Ravages of Time: What Your Real-Time Analyzer Ignores.”
Audio Science live sound events take a look at topics such as taming extraneous loudspeaker coverage and achieving true stereo “spatiality” in two events hosted by Blair McNair. Presenter Skip Taylor will also host a session on Class-D audio amplifier design and circuitry workings in “Challenges and Options for Using GaN FETs in High-Performance Class-D Audio Amplifiers.” Along with sound reinforcement technologies and applications, the important topic of hearing health is addressed in “Striking the Balance Between On-Stage Performance and Hearing Protection” with presenters Scott Leslie and Melissa Heche.
The Audio Sciences program at AES@NAMM concludes on Sunday, January 27, with the first three sessions of the day being presented in Mandarin. These will cover a range of topical areas, offering “Condenser Microphones: An Anatomic Application Guide” with host Bing Lin, and “Portable Surround Sound Through HRTF” presented by Xiaowei Fan, as well as “Digital vs. Analog Level Control: A Discussion of Dynamic Range” led by Zhaoquan Fu.
The afternoon continues with a series of events covering additional core topics. Bruce Black returns to the stage with “Essential Elements for Creating High Performance Acoustical Spaces,” and Greg Riggs will review a number of acoustic and audio principles that serve as a technical foundation for any audio engineer’s skill set in “Audio 101: Practical Science and Applications for Aspiring Audio Engineers.” Audio Sciences events conclude with a revisit to the “Dynamic EQ With Parametric Filters” discussion with Duane Wise hosting panelists Wes Maebe & Tom Marks.
