Dr Loughran obtained a Bachelors degree in Electronic Engineering in UCD before undertaking a Masters in Music and Media Technology at Trinity College Dublin. She continued to specialise in sound and music analysis by undertaking a PhD at the University of Limerick entitled `Musical Instrument Identification with Feature Selection Using Evolutionary Methods' under the supervision of Michael O'Neill and Jacqueline Walker.

Dr Loughran returned to UCD in 2013 as the IT & Media Coordinator for CASL while continuing her own part-time research on speaker verification. In November 2014 she returned to research full-time on a Post Doctoral contract as part of the Applications in Evolutionary Design project (App'Ed) under SFI. Here she is a member of the Natural Computing Research and Applications (NCRA) group, examining the application of algorithms based on naturally occurring phenomena to real-world problems. She specialises in using evolutionary computation methods to better understand creative problems such as music composition. Since starting her Post Doctoral contract she has been lead author on multiple conference and journal publications and has been invited to speak at a number of international events.
