The significantly larger amount of data generated by high definition video has created the need for a higher capacity optical disc. Not unexpectedly, there have been several proposed solutions, two of which are about to be launched into the US and Japanese consumer markets, with Europe expected to follow later this year. This paper provides an overview of the two formats –Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD – and analyzes the different approaches adopted by their developers.
