Abstract: This paper introduces the MPEG-4 Intellectual Property Management & Protection (IPMP) Framework, a generic approach to the specification of a framework for the management and protection of intellectual property rights. Besides specifying a flexible way to identify content, MPEG-4 IPMP offers a -hooks- mechanism that allows the inclusion of information in the MPEG-4 bitstream, which is used to indicate that a particular non-normative IPMP system is to be used to manage access to that stream. This enables the design of applications that provide efficient management and protection of both content-related and patent-related IP.
