Abstract: Many new acoustical materials have been developed in the past few years, which can assist designers in creating improved listening and performing environments. These include the reflection phase grating, RPG-a broad bandwidth, wide-angle sound diffusing surface; a broad bandwidth sound absorbing surface; the RPG variable acoustics system-a modular surface consisting of triangular columns containing diffuse, absorptive and reflective sides; the ENSEMBLE-an acoustical shell based on the RPG, which heightens the sense of acoustical shell based on the RPG, which heightens the sense of ensemble for performing musicians; and the RPG CLOUD-an easily focused hanging ceiling panel which provides early diffuse energy. We will describe these new materials and present acoustically balanced designs, utilizing appropriate amounts of diffusive, absorptive, and reflective components, for recording/broadcast studios, worship spaces, performing arts facilities, teleconferencing rooms, and home use.
