Abstract: This paper presents an active bridge allowing for precise audio-rate manipulation of a string’s termination for the purposes of modifying string instrument timbre. The design of the bridge actuator and height sensor is discussed, and the benefits of using feedforward posicast control over a feedback compensator for controlling the dynamics of the severely underdamped bridge actuator system are established.
