Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) is a digital radio system for the long-, medium- and short-wave bands. It offers much improved sound quality, greater ease of use and a better listening experience. DRM is a now a mature standard with hundreds of hours of transmissions on air every day. This paper will explain how it was designed to meet the challenges of propagation in these bands, the audio coding playing a crucial role. We will also present some of our recent work, including consumer receiver testing, live reception monitoring and our involvement in a trial of DRM with BBC Radio Devon.
