Usually the sound reaching our ears arises from several different sources. The peripheral auditory system separates the different frequency components and somewhere in the brain the internal representations of the frequency components are assigned to their appropriate sources. The process of doing this is called “perceptual grouping.” This paper describes some of the factors that influence perceptual grouping considering both simultaneous grouping and sequential grouping.
