Digital Radio—Quality or Quantity

Document Thumbnail

Digital radio in the UK is now delivered in a wide variety of ways. One of the most prominent methods is DAB (Eureka-147) within VHF Band III. DAB employs MPEG 1/2 Layer 2 audio encoding. Because of the payload constraints within the few DAB multiplexes, there has been pressure on the bitrates used for services. There has been considerable disquiet from consumers about the resulting perceived quality. The reasons and basis for this are discussed in the context of the research and listener experience with MP3. It is recommended that the bit rate used for a DAB service is 1.7bps per linear source sample.
