Abstract: This paper describes “I Hear NY3D,” a project for capturing and reproducing 3D soundfields in New York City. First order Ambisonic recordings of various locations in Manhattan have taken place, to be used for both aesthetic and informational purposes. The collected data allows for the creation of high quality, fully immersive auditory soundscapes that can be played back at any periphonic speaker array configuration through real time matrixing. Binaural renderings of the same data are also available for more portable applications.
