Ufuk Önen, Ph.D., is a sound designer, audio consultant, author, and educator with 30 years of professional experience in music production and audio post-production for visual media. He has worked on more than 200 Turkish, European, and North American audio-visual projects and contributed to 300 audio, sound reinforcement, cinema sound installation, and electroacoustic projects.
He is the author of 'Ses Kayıt ve Müzik Teknolojileri,' the first reference book in the Turkish language covering audio recording and music technology. Today, this book is standard required reading used in numerous universities and schools throughout the country. A prolific writer with a love for sharing his passion with others, he has published three other books, 50 articles and 250 blog posts.
He is the co-founder of Audio Technologies for Music and Media (ATMM), a trilogy of international conferences at Bilkent University, 2012-2014, dedicated to audio and music technologies. The first of its kind in Turkey, ATMM brought together professionals, academics, and students from eleven different countries.
He is a member of the AES since 2006. He served as the Vice President of the AES, responsible for the Southern Europe/Middle East/Africa region in the 2017-2019 term. He helped to found the Nigerian Section. Currently, he is a member of the Education Committee of the AES.
Ufuk Önen holds a B.A. in Linguistics (Hacettepe University), M.A. in Communication and Design (Bilkent University), Ph.D. in Music/Arts & Design (University of Salford), and is a graduate of Los Angeles Recording School. He teaches both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses on sound, music, and media at Bilkent University.
