Summary

More than 80 members and guests of the AES NewYork Section met on October 16th in a jointly-produced symposium with NYU-MARL (Music and Audio Research Lab), filling all available seats in NYU's James Dolan Studio and Control Room. The symposium included discussions and demonstrations of Multi-Dimensional Sound and Microphone techniques used in the capturing of MDS.
With 3D all the rage in the video world, there are "3D" (prefer MD) audio systems to go along with these. From binaural systems, based on subjective human perception of sound (read, psychoacoustics) to multi-channel set-ups, with as many as 10 speakers.
Presenters included Ralph Glasgal who discussed and demonstrated his Ambiophonics 2.0 system, capable of delivering 180 degrees of sound reproduction, with two speakers, set closely together, at a 20 degee angle. The 4.0 system is of course capable of delivering a 360 degree soundfield.
Edgar Chouieri, Director of Princeton University's Program in Engineering Physics, and Director of Princeton's Electric Propulsion and Plasma Dynamics (that's rocket science) is a music lover who discussed his work on sophisticated filters, allowing highly accurate crosstalk cancellation. Mr. Chouieri discussed the benefits of this in reproducing the listening environment of a recording. Math was presented in "English" or more laymen's terms. Excited Q&A and discussions followed.
Sennheiser Tonmeister Gregor Zielinsky presented and demonstrated the Auro 3D system. This system utilizes up to 9 or 10 speakers, including front and rear height speakers, and during the recordings, both front and rear height microphones are utilized. Mr Zielinsky sat in the James Dolan Studio Control Room to demonstrate the system's reproduction using his recordings, which ranged from a rock band in the studio to Dianne Reeves and her quartet to a full symphony recording of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. The playbacks were very impressive, leaving listeners with a fine example of where recording and reproduction may be heading.
