Summary

Malcolm begins the meeting by introducing what AES is to the crowd, and how it is the organization responsible for setting standards for gear, the networking opportunities available to you and how it unites engineers, scientists and developers. He then touches on the numerous events AES sponsors and attends such as NAMM, and the AES conference, as well as the discounts, and career resources available to mentors. Malcolm then explains in detail the amount of resources and committees that AES has, mentioning spatial audio, cinema, video games
Malcolm then announces that the CRAS student section of AES and how that you need to be a paying member to be on the board. Then he explains the initial student fee of $50 and how it goes up $25 per year, David Kohr makes a surprise appearance, just checking in on the meeting and the board members, then jumps in to explain a story about a student from Australia who came to CRAS, and through AES was able to network with professionals and set up his career in Los Angeles as a professional. He then announces that the AES section of LA is meeting every month and how the last meeting topic was about mixing for film and optimizing control surface workflow. David Kohr also mentions how you can join these meetings as a paying member and that they have numerous sections in major cities!
Malcolm moves on to a new announcement at CRAS, where the new SSL Origin console in Studio B is up and running! And that the student body is able to book the console to be used in a tracking or mixing session on the stipulation of signing up for a review class.
For this weeks introductions Malcolm poses the question of "How do you study for your tests?, and how do you unwind after?" The board members and room answer with responses from "Hanging out with friends" to looking back over study materials and extra content that the CRAS connect offers. To "learning how to rephrase information in a way that makes sense to me" Sofia then goes on to mention during the introductions the numerous quizlets she has made for study purposes and offers to give them to the crowd.
Malcolm then briefly introduces the board members and their contact information and mentions how any of the board members are an open book. Then he moves on to the CRAS mentor program and how they offer study groups for almost every big test and proficiency in the program, as well as how the team offers 1 on 1 study sessions. Sol then adds on how that to get onto the mentor team Brandon Valfre will email the student in cycle 6 and that if you need 1 on 1 mentor help you can email the student help email to get assigned to a mentor.
Malcolm then moves the meeting subject over to the AES subgroups and asks the leaders of said groups in attendance to explain what they go over. Sol then goes over his EDM production subgroup, and how the people coming have been asking about heavy riddim basses, and the Reason Square4 wavetable. Bea then explains her Guitar and Bass subgroup and that the plan for the next meeting is to restring and setup and electric bass for another student. Starr then mentions his Sound Design subgroup, which was implemented to allow students to learn how to sound design their own drums and create sounds that fit the track that they are working on. CJ then shows off Mikey's Jammin subgroup, where a group of students every week get together in a studio and record a jam session.
Sol then does his section on the production tip of the week. This week they have decided to show off the CableGuys Shaperbox 3 plugin. He shows off his main use for it, with the volume module and the very customizable sidechaining capabilities the plugin offers and how he uses it to sidechain his song to his kicks and snares which allows the drums to be very punchy and loud. Sol then demonstrates the time module, and the similarities to FL Studios gross beat and just how weird and creative you can be with it. Sol then also shows off one of the presets using 4 of the modules within ShaperBox to create very interesting effects.
Then moving onto the sample showdown, Sol shows off his creation from last week, with granular synthesis. Then Malcolm shares the 4 bar he made in Logic, using the built-in sampler, as well as using the hi hat for the snare to create a simple beat. CJ then shares their sound effects they created for the video game project using the samples, explaining in detail how they used Ableton Lives warp modes, and pitch shift modulation to create the sounds. Wyatt then shows off his sound, that he created using the sample which was the main bass sound from Knock2's hit song dashtar* and how he slowed down the sample by as far as it could go to create a sound similar to a video game death sound.
Malcolm then wraps up the meeting by thanking the group and to network with the other attendees.
