Summary

The PNW Section began its 2018-19 season of meetings with a demo/discussion of 3-D and immersive recordings by Ulrike Schwarz and Jim Anderson of Anderson Audio NY. Jim is a multi-Grammy winner, past AES President, and a faculty member of the NYU Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. Ulrike is a recipient of multiple European awards including the Diamant d'Opera, Diapason d'Or and Echo Klassik. Some 63 people (29 AES Members) came to the Microsoft Dolby Atmos theater on the Redmond Microsoft campus.

Jim and Ulrike have spent the past year recording and mixing music in high resolution and in immersive formats from venues in New York to Norway to Havana. Their recordings have been made in various 3D recording formats from 5.1 to 11.1, and feature solo piano, big band, jazz trio and quartet, and orchestral performances.

Photos and videos were shown and discussed of the setups for the musical pieces played. Merging's Horus was the recording system used, and mixing took place at Skywalker Sound and mastering by Bob Ludwig and Darcy Proper.

Examples played included:

•Jane Ira Bloom (soprano sax), from her "Early Americans" album, Grammy award for Best Surround Album 2018.

•Several big-band selections from "The Sammy Sessions" played by the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors and featuring compositions and arrangements by Sammy Nestico.

•Gonzalo Rubalcaba, solo piano live in Havana in 11.1 surround.

•The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra (Norway) playing Gisle Kverdokk's Symphonic Dances in 11.1.

Afterwards, door prizes and refreshments were offered.

Prize winners:
•AES AVAR 2018 Conference T-shirts (Lawrence Schwedler): Hannah Carlson, Daniel Muldrew, Tom Hall
•AES lapel pin (Bob Moses): Stephen DeVore
•Surround Blu-Ray, Stavanger Symphony Orch (Anderson/Schwarz): Sara Broderick
