Summary

James Linton, owner of local home studio SoundWaves Productions, came to visit
AES CRAS to talk about home studios and alternative options. He opened up by
posing the questions "What happens if you're interested in audio engineering but
aren't in a major audio city like New York or LA?", "What if you do go to one of the big
cities and things don't work out, what are your options?" Instead of going big or
going home, Linton's philosophy is "If you build it, they will come".

He went on to state that if you can't find a job, the alternative could be to build your
own studio and work your business. "No one can stop you", James added. He then
went to talk about how he came to building his home studio, answering the many
questions students had about the process of making the space's architecture
acoustically sound, acquiring and working with clients, what things to invest in, etc...

Finally, he talked about knowing your local market, what is needed, and figuring out
how to best fill a niche that your area needs. James Linton concluded by saying that
for a successful business, you need these three things: 1. Find a job someone else
wants done. 2. Do it better than your competition. 3. Do it for a better price.
