Meeting Topic: Forging a Career: Artist Development, Branding and Positioning
Speaker Name: Joel Wanasek, owner of Drum Forge and Unstoppable Recording Machine via Facetime
Meeting Location: Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences 1205 N. Fiesta Blvd Gilbert Az
CRAS AES was proud to have the opportunity to have a video chat with Joel Wanasek,
who runs both Drum Forge and Unstoppable Recording Machine alongside renown
producer Joey Sturgis. After introducing himself, Joel Wanasek went into a deep dive
on how to have an awesome career. First he covered how to dominate the early
stages of one's career, sharing stories of how he worked hard and built a career for
himself in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Then, the conversation shifted to working with
clients, how to acquire them and communicate with them.
Next, he moved on to the middle stages, talking about why and how to develop
artists, understanding their position in their respective markets and how to create a
brand for them that will make a lasting impact.
Finally, the night ended with some Q & A, all of which covered topics such as
managing social media for your artists or as a producer, engineer, etc..., how to
properly pitch a band, how to better manage artists, deciding where to initially start
your career.
The most important thing Joel wanted to stress was to enjoy it. "Life is about the
journey, it's not the goal" he remarked. He encouraged the attending students to
never give up, pay attention to detail, and work hard.
If you want to learn more information, Joel Wanasek has a blog, podcast
(Unstoppable Recording Machine Podcast), and an online recording school for rock
and metal producers, "Nail the Mix" all available on the website "urm.academy".
