Summary

As all of the students gathered and the clinic kicked off, Scott let us know right off the bat that he himself has sat in the same shoes as we have as a student. When he was a student he wasn't that into modular synths. As the years grew, so did Scott's collection of synths. As we found out, the modular synth that Scott brought in today doesn't have a specific name. It's very similar to the API lunchbox where you can customize every slot inside the case. We also learned that you start off with an oscillator because thats where the noise starts. Without patch cables there is no sound. That being said you first patch in an oscillator to a VCA. Theres four different sign waves that you have to start out with. He then showed us different ways to control the pitch. Scott demonstrated how much of a difference there is with the slightest movement of each knob. The sweep filter demonstration was done with a notch, bandpass, hi-pass and low pass filters. When playing with a modular synth like the one Scott has built, you'll never get the same result. At the end of the clinic, Scott let anyone interested stay behind and run different types of sign waves through the live sound PA.
