Summary

This Thursday CRAS AES took a short trip over to Lamont Audio recording studios. Just a few miles away from our Gilbert campus lies this hidden gem. Studio owner, Sandy Lamont, graciously invited us over and quickly kicked off the the tour by letting us know that everything besides the computers (console, outboard gear, speakers, guitars) were built by him.

Sandy started building in the late 60's. Shortly after, in 1972, he founded Desert Sound recording studios. When word spread that a local Tangent console dealer was going out of business, Mr. Lamont asked if he could purchase pots and other parts of the consoles. As his collection grew, so did his creativity.

After his successful 13 year run with Dessert Sound, Sandy Lamont founded Lamont Audio, LLC. Inside lies his very own 24 inch console with 32 channel monitors. As well as 2 full racks of outboard gear that he built including an LA2A, LA3, LA4, Fairchild, DBX 119 and much more. On the back wall in the control room theres a Scully 2" 16 track, MCI 2" 24 track, Otari 10 1/4" and 1/2" 2 track MTR's. Along with 5 custom speakers and 2 custom subs, are a few Hafler and Rane monitors.

Even more intriguing then the transformer-less mic pre's, and a prestigious collection of custom built guitars were the two stereo plate reverbs that Sandy built. Besides the other 59 microphones in the locker, Mr. Lamont provides a Lawson 251, Lawson 47, and 2 Crown PZM 30GPB's in the drum panel. There is also a beautiful Yamaha baby grand and a Ludwig/Gretch drum set.

Sandy Lamont is a true audio wizard and local legend. With the mix between his passion and excitement, he sets an indescribable vibe that you truly would have to experience for yourself. It would be an understatement to say that this place creates unique sounds with all of its hand built equipment.
