AES Boston Section
January 2009 Meeting
With Matt McClure

On Tuesday, January 13, 2009, the Boston Section of the Audio Engineering Society hosted Nashville based Producer/Engineer Matt McClure to speak about "Working & Getting Work in Today's Market/The Nashville Approach".

Matt started off with a detailed timeline of what led him to the audio industry and how he got started in the business. He shared many of his experiences working on the road. He expressed that having a good attitude and work ethic can open up a lot of opportunities along the way, especially when you are just starting out and not familiar with the process of how things are done.

Matt began teaching while doing gigs on the road and eventually led to an increased desire to settle down into the recording studio environment. He outlined the process of how song demos are cut in Nashville and used visual examples from some of his session setups. He discussed what is done differently when recording a final version of a song and played back-to-back examples of the same song from demo to final version.

After showing pictures and describing the gear he uses in his own studio, he shared his mixing techniques showing his Pro Tools Mix Template. He walked through the different types of plug-ins he used on his example template. He also described how he chooses to "selectively tune" a vocal to enhance the performance without making it too sterile.

Matt has a host of credits such as; Lari White, Tanya Tucker, Jo Dee Messina, Lone Star, George Strait, Pam Tillis, Terry Clark, James Bonamy, Michael Peterson, Cyndi Thompson, Tammy Cochran, The Tonight Show, Late Show with David Letterman, Donnie and Marie, CBS This Morning, The Today Show, Regis and Cathy Lee, and Good Morning Texas.
