Summary

On October 15-17, the Hamburg Student Section, based at Unversity of Applied Sciences (HAW) Hamburg in North Germany, went on a study trip to Karlsruhe in South Germany. On the schedule was a visit of Schoeps microphone development and manufacturing, as well as a visit of the famous Center of Arts and Media Technology (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie ZKM), and the University of Arts and Design (HfG) Karlsruhe.

At Schoeps, located in a beautiful historic district of the city, our group received a warm welcome by the Director, Dr. Helmut Wittek, and HAW Hamburg graduate Hans Riekehof. After an impressive factory tour by R&D Engineer Hans Riekehof, which brought us from electronics and capsule development to housings manufacturing and electroplating, Dr. Wittek gave us a presentation on digital beamforming principles utilized in high-class shotgun microphones and on 3D recording techniques.

The Center of Arts and Media Technology (ZKM) had, besides a formidable exhibition of Germany's 1960's leading Fluxus artists Joseph Beuys, Bazon Brock and Wolf Vostell, an impressive range of exhibits of contemporary electronic and interactive art. An absolute highlight was the exclusive presentation of spatial sound art in the huge 43-channel "Sound Dome" by Götz Dipper. The perfect completion of the trip was a meeting at the Unversity of Arts and Design with Dr. Paul Modler and Sound Art students.
