Location: The Mix Room at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA (Available On Site & On Line)

Moderated by: Marc A. Gallo with David Ivory

Speaker(s): Ryan Ulyate, Grammy Nominated Producer & Engineer

Come join us for an interactive Dolby Atmos discussion featuring a Q&A with Marc A. Gallo and Ryan Ulyate. As a producer and engineer, Ryan has worked with artists such as Tom Petty, George Harrison and ELO. Since 2020 he has remixed several Tom Petty albums in Dolby Atmos, and recently Ryan’s debut solo album, Act 3, was nominated for the 2024 Immersive Audio Album Grammy.

Ryan will discuss his simplified approach to mixing in Dolby Atmos and how he approaches classic songs like “Free Fallin”, as well as how he took all that he learned about Immersive Audio to create new material from the ground up for “Act 3”. His philosophy is simple: "Just put people inside the music and let the music do the work”. Take a listen beforehand to some Tom Petty and Act 3 tracks in Atmos, and join us with your questions and observations for a fun and passionate discussion!

Ryan Ulyate Background:

For decades, Grammy-nominated Producer and Engineer Ryan Ulyate has recorded and mixed music for some of the biggest artists in the industry. He has worked with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Electric Light Orchestra, George Harrison, Traveling Wilburys, and members of Fleetwood Mac.

Ryan has also been at the forefront of immersive audio since the mid-2000s, starting with the format, 5.1, better known as surround sound. With the introduction of Dolby Atmos, which added height to the soundscape, he began creating immersive mixes from his studio, starting with Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers”, aiming to put the active listener inside the music.

For Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' Greatest Hits release in 2022, Ryan did a deep dive into their original multitracks to select the right takes, match the stereo mix, and create stems to ultimately recreate the music into Dolby Atmos mixes.

Although these mixes were painstakingly gratifying, they prompted him to consider a different approach when working in Dolby Atmos. Why not initiate the recording process with an immersive mix in mind? While one approach involves reworking stereo mixes into Dolby Atmos, starting with an immersive approach from the outset is clearly another.

This philosophy is the genesis of his Grammy-nominated immersive album, Act 3, recorded and mixed specifically for Dolby Atmos. In this seminar, we’ll delve deep into his approach.
