Recent trends toward automatic station operation, and the maintaining of more uniform levels between program and commercial messages require an increasing dependence on automatic-gain-control amplifiers. The basic problems of distortion and -thump- can be better solved with some of the new gain-controlling devices currently available; and the addition of an expansion channel to the normal compression allows greater compression levels to be used before -gain-pumping- become objectionable. Graphic illustrations of peak and average program levels show the uniform action obtained by the use of limiters and AGC amplifiers.
