The Interaural Time Difference in Binaural Synthesis

A previous listening experiment showed that a pair of head-related transfer functions can be represented by its minimum-phase components and a pure delay as interaural time difference (ITD), where the ITD is determined as the interaural group delay difference of the excess phase components evaluated between 0 and 1.5 kHz. The ITDs were determined from the HRTFs of 70 people, the spherical and ellipsoidal head models and an artificial head, and the Woodworth/Schlosberg formula. Several methods for calculating the ITD are described, and their results are analyzed.:
