When recording or amplifying the human voice it is most common to place the microphone in the near field at distances from 2 to 30 centimeters from the mouth. But the listening distance is normally 1 meter or more. The amount, and the role, of the spectral changes that occur when changing the recording distance and direction to the mouth is discussed in this paper.
