The concept of HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) based filtering with cross talk cancellation is reconsidered and optimized for the standard 3/2 surround loudspeaker format. The design includes head related filtered early echoes, in order to place a sound source at a defined distance from the listener. We focus on implementation issues, in particular the required accuracy of the HRTF approximations, their normalization, and possible simplifications, if many input channels must be processed in parallel.
