Many new digital audio formats allow wide dynamic range transmission and reproduction obviating the need for source compression. In some listening environments a means for reducing the dynamic range becomes necessary. Other format features, such as multichannel programs, add additional dynamic range control requirements. This paper describes the requirements and a solution for a dynamic range control system.
