Correlation Studies Relating Magnetic Measurements to Audio Frequency Performance of Magnetic Tape

Document Thumbnail

Background information is presented including definitions, hysteresis loops, and examples illustrating the difficulty in predicting magnetic tape performance from BH measurements. Magnetic measurements made at 60 cps are presented for a sample group of tapes representing numerous types and brands. Results include retentivity, remanence, coercive force, squareness ratio, and orientation factor. Histograms are presented to compare the characteristics of the samples. Performance data are presented in graphical form including reproduce head output and distortion. The magnetic and performance data are compared using correlation diagrams to indicate the relationship between magnetic measurements and record-reproduce characteristics.
