A large body of knowledge exists for 3-D acoustical simulation over loudspeaker arrays. These techniques can be used for generating surround material for the 5.1 loudspeaker format. Using such tools, the mixing process is replaced by the concept of creating virtual acoustical simulations for which the 5.1 loudspeaker array is the target reproduction array.
