Current Developments in High Quality Miniature Microphones

The design criteria for a new miniature microphone intended for theatre applications are discussed. Measurements were made on different persons to investigate the acoustical response close to parts of the body. The measurements were made with a 1/4 inch measuring microphone at different positions. It could be shown that a frequency range up to 20kHz was necessary for a faithful reproduction of the human voice but that different frequency responses were required depending on the position of the microphone on the body or head respectively. Other important parameters such as dynamic range, sensitivity and environmental matters are also discussed.
