Group Synthesis with Genetic Algorithms

An automated genetic algorithm method for decomposing a musical instrument tone into group synthesis parameters is introduced. Previous research has determined these parameters by hand or "greedy" procedures. With the present matching procedure the control afforded by group synthesis can be used to reconstruct a sound or modify it. Results are presented for trumpet, guitar, and tenor voice tones using the matching procedure, and these results are compared to those of other wavetable matching methods.
