Processing of Musical Tones Using a Combined Quadratic Polynomial-Phase Sinusoid and Residual (QUASAR) Signal Model

A QUASAR signal model is proposed which combines quadratic polynomial-phase sinusoids and a residual for music analysis and synthesis. This signal model and the corresponding model parameter estimation schemes have some advantages over previously proposed ones in terms of memory use (data reduction), computational complexity, and synthesis quality. In contrast to the conventional time-frequency analysis approach, that is, obtaining -time-localized- model parameters on a frame-by-frame basis and with an energy fitting criterion, an estimation procedure is presented to obtain -globally optimized- model parameters with a global waveform fitting criterion. Different from the existing approach to the synthesis of the residual where a noise-driven source filter model is used, it is proposed to use LPC-based waveform coders for the synthesis of the residual. Results of synthesizing some popular musical instrument sounds are presented.
