In order to assist partial laryngetomee patients and others with voice deficiencies (dysphonia), a small, self-contained, voice-assist amplifier has been designed. The requirements for this amplifier were determined from an investigation of several people with impaired voices. Sound level measurements indicated that their speaking level was often 10 to 20 decibels below that of a normal talker. Sound spectrographs revealed what frequency compensations could be made to help restore a particular voice. The acoustic gain available from this amplifier is sufficient to raise most weak voices to normal speech levels. The amplifier frequency response is compensated to give a more natural sound to the affected voice while maintaining speech intelligibility.
