ISO/MPEG Subjective Tests on Multichannel Audio Systems

Document Thumbnail

In January and February of 1994, a series of subjective listening tests was carried out jointly by FTZ-Telekom and the BBC R&D Department to assess the quality of a number of multichannel audio codecs being developed as part of the work toward the MPEG-2 standard. The results of these tests were reported to ISO/MPEG in March of 1994. These tests adhered as closely as possible to the emerging ITU-R Recommendation BS-1116 on subjective test methods, and this paper describes the steps which were taken to follow this recommendation. Some of the difficulties that emerged during the tests are reported together with suggestions as to how such tests could be improved in the future. The results of the tests are also summarized.
