Multichannel surround sound has been designed for a listening area for several persons in which a three-channel reproduction of direct sound exists in relation to an optimal screen size, which is much better than the existing stereo sound image. Additionally, two channels are necessary for room impression at the side and back. The room acoustics conditions require loudspeaker positions that should be integrated into the multimedia furnishing of the room. Proposals are presented. Noise levels based on usual sound insulation between adjacent apartments have an influence on the positioning of loudspeakers. Some examples are given.
