Mechanical Damping in Tape Transports

Most of the dynamic elements of a tape transport store energy rather than dissipate it; therefore distrubances due to mechanical imperfections will result in the undesirable condition of oscillations of speed which die out slowly. The various physical mechanisms unable for dissipating (damping) this energy are shown along with a quantitative analysis (using electrical analogs) of their effects.
