Radio is a live medium. Production of radio programs is usually carried out within a very dynamic environment, where last-minute changes and rescheduling occur frequently. Recent developments in studio system technology have enabled the simplification and automation of specific operational tasks. However, a result of this is that a typical broadcast studio desk is cluttered with various audio and information systems, which more often than not actually results in creating new difficulties for the presenter. Another important issue for modern broadcast organizations is the preparation for digital sound broadcasting. This paper describes an integrated digital broadcast studio system developed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Several of the important design concepts for the system are presented as well as a description of the development process adopted. The paper concludes with a brief assessment of the installations at the ABC Radio Southbank Centre in Melbourne, and the Toowong radio studios in Brisbane.
